folding rope stool

I have always been fascinated in novel approaches to a problem.
When I see a work of pure creativity, it motivates me to start on my next design.
It inspires me to tackle a problem in my own way.
Thus was my reason for deciding to come up with a rather unconventional design for my chair design project.
A wooden stool is a common product.
Most of them are static, with 3 or 4 legs and additional support made of the same material.
So I chose rope as my main material for support system.
Then, I took advantage of the flexible quality of the material and made the whole chair foldable.

Down on the left is my initial design.
I tried to keep the structure and mechanism as simple as possible.
But as I started making, I saw new problems arise because
I had overestimated the strength of my rope.
I reinforced my design with a longer rope.

4 pieces of plywood are supported by a single rope weaved throughout the chair.
The chair can be folded from its usual stance by lifting the rope from the center of the seat.

I made this chair for my 2nd year Product Design Fundamentals course. It is made of plywood, a few hinges, and a climbing rope.
